Mercedes-Benz Fall 2012 Fashion Week NYC: Richard Chai

Backstage at Richard Chai's show in the tents at Lincoln Center, I caught up with lead hairstylists for Aveda Frank Rizzieri and Kevin Ryan, who were creating long hairstyles for the models that started off looking polished, but then were roughed up a bit right before the girls hit the runway. "It mimics how the hair would look if you pulled a sweater over your head," Ryan told me. To get the look, the stylists prepped the hair with Aveda Volumizing Tonic, then blow-dried the top section to give lift at the root. Next, they applied Men Pure-Formance Grooming Clay to the hair, followed by Brilliant Humectant Pomade, and brushed hair back and pinned it to set. Finally, just before models walked the runway, the stylists used a fine-tooth comb to comb the hair forward for a tousled look and then applied Brilliant Spray-On Shine and combed the hair backwards again, running their fingers through strands for the final finish.

Meanwhile on the makeup side, James Kaliardos for M.A.C created an androgynous look by intensifying the eyes with a walnut-coffee color, adding taupe along the contours of the face and finishing the look with a classic pinkish nude lip. Providing the finishing touch, Elle, lead nail tech for Essie, painted nails with Glamor Purse.
