Mercedes-Benz Spring 2012 Fashion Week NYC: Betsey Johnson

It's always a party backstage at Betsey Johnson, and this season proved no different. Press, models and artists enjoyed the festive atmosphere, complete with champagne, mini cupcakes, balloons, pink clip-on extensions scented with Johnson's new Too Too perfume and a DJ spinning dance tunes. Peter Gray, lead stylist for Cutler Salon, was on hand to tell me about how Johnson's theme for the collection inspired the hairstyle for the show. "I walked in and she literally said, 'T & A,'" he told me. "It's a real celebration of a womanly body." Gray used Jerry Hall's unabashedly glamorous look from the 1970s as a point of reference to create a side-swept ponytail covered by a swath of hair that fell in undulating waves. To get the look, Gray pulled one section of hair into a low side-swept ponytail, then set the other section with a 3/4-inch curling iron before brushing out the curls and laying the hair on top of the ponytail. Key products included Redken Full Frame 07 protective volumizing mousse, Redken Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray and Cutler Shine Tattoo Spray.

Sarah Lucero, lead makeup artist for Stila Cosmetics, created "bombshell sexy makeup" that perfectly complemented the hair and clothing, which truly did showcase the models assets (enhanced by falsies when necessary!). The look was centered around Stila's Giggle Hot Pink Lip Enamel, which Johnson selected herself. Other elements included a Brigitte Bardot-inspired eye with tons of mascara and touchable, clean-looking skin. Adding a dose of bling to the beauty look,  Nonie Creme, founding creative director for Butter London, created reverse half-moon manicures by topping a black natural nail with an offset glittering silver false nail. Each nail was accented with one big diamante and one nail was pierced with a tiny black safety pin.
