In addition to serving as senior editor for American Salon, Jolene Turner is responsible for spearheading the publication's digital media activities. Turner writes and researches topics related to hair and skincare, from new technological advancements to what salon owners are doing to make their businesses a success. Outside of work, Jolene volunteers for the NYC-based non-profit Anjellicle Cats Rescue and writes and performs comedy theater.
Mercedes-Benz Spring 2013 Fashion Week: Marimekko
Jon Reyman for Aveda styled a low pony with a sculptural twist for the the first ever Marimekko Fashion Week show featuring the brand's Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Known for bright colors and graphic prints, the hair fit in with the brand while also not taking away from the clothes. Reyman noted that the look for the hair was intentional, but nothing too overdone. “Hair is backcombed on top of the head for volume and parted deeply on the left side to create a square shape," he said. "Fingers raked through the hair create texture that gives the style movement.”
The look also had a very masculine feel to it. To prep the hair Reyman used Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep; for raking through the sections Aveda Light Elements Texturizing Cream helped add dimension. The look was set with Control Force Firm Hold Hairspray.
Lyne Desnoyers for Mac Cosmetics was the lead makeup artist and created one distinct look with three different bright eyes that coincided perfectly with the colors that pop through out the collection. "The colors celebrate the heritage of the house," Desnoyers said.
The bright eyes were purposefully set to be a cross between a shadow and an eyeliner look, but with the ball of the lid left completely bare. The skin was kept balmy and fresh and a plummy red was used to create a natural lip, so all the makeup focus was at the eyes.
