Hair Industry Helping Haiti
In my Viewpoint column in the March issue, I highlighted just a small portion of the many salons or companies who were raising money to help Haiti. Since that was written almost a month ago, I wanted to give a quick update and mention another salon's amazing effort.
First, about a month ago, Paul Mitchell Schools' Winn Claybaugh challenged his students and teachers to raise $100,000 for the cause; I'm happy to report that with the help of a personal donation from John Paul Mitchell Systems co-founder John Paul DeJoria, they were able to achieve that lofty goal in only two weeks!
Second, a wonderful joint effort in New Jersey led to a group of salons raising more than $6,000 for UNICEF's relief efforts. Dieci Lifestyle Spa in Livingston hosted an evening Haircuts for Haiti event that featured technicians from Bangz Salon and Wellness Spa in Montclair, Antonio’s Salon and Spa in Livington, Panico Salon and Spa in West Caldwell and Sarracino Salon and Spa at Mira’s in Livingston providing discounted haircuts, color gloss and condition services, eyebrow and lip waxing, manicures, mini-facials, massages, paraffin treatments, mini make-up lessons, chair massages and blowouts. Local jewelry store Dandy Lion Jewelry also sold select pieces during the event, donating all proceeds to UNICEF, while other local businesses donated raffle items and food and drink. “We are overcome with the outpouring of support from our peers from this event,” says Paul Gaglioti, co-owner of Dieci Lifestyle Spa. “We called on salon owners in the area and not one told me no. We are excited and blessed to be surrounded by such talent in the industry and good hearted people.”
