Tips and Tricks: Men's Texture

Looking at male models walking down recent runways, you’re instantly struck with one thought about their hair—men really are embracing a variety of textures. Long disheveled hair, glossy finger waves, blown-out volume and sophisticated sleekness were all huge texture trends. Let these looks inspire you to create a fashion-forward texture for your own male clients.

Disheveled
Amy Farid, a Bumble and bumble stylist, had a unique directive at the John Elliott fashion show: Make the hair look slightly disheveled from being out in the sun. “John Elliot wanted to create his own version of a diverse, preppy yacht club,” says Farid. To accomplish this goal, she saturated the hair with Bumble and bumble Tonic Lotion, sprayed in Bumble and bumble Thickening Hairspray at the root and blow-dried to get lift. Then Farid worked in a new Bumble and bumble gel-hybrid, that’s launching Spring 2017, to sculpt the hair and create a disheveled finish.
Waves
At the Wood House fashion show, designer Julian Woodhouse created a collection that focused on confidence, classic styling and functionality. Stylist and Oribe Educator, Louis Orozco, emulated this style with a masculine hairstyle featuring a strong, slightly feminine wave. To get the look, Orozco prepped the hair with Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray. Then he applied Oribe Rock Hard Gel with a tint brush at the roots to create strength. After creating the finger waves, Orozco slicked down the back and sides with Oribe Star Glow Styling Wax.
Sleekness
“This year on the men’s fashion runway, the looks stepped away from the metro lumberjack to a more sophisticated style,” says Mia Liguori, Scruples Co-President Creative. “Big name designers such as Louis Vuitton, Prada and Versace all showcased an Old Hollywood, sleek look with a side part. And that’s what inspired our style here.” To get the look, Liguori and Charlie Price, a Creative Consultant for Scruples, applied Scruples Smooth Out Straightening Gel and blow-dried the hair into shape. Afterwards, they added a small amount of Scruples Dual Design Gel/Wax to produce a sleek finish.
Volume
At the Suitsupply show, Manny Padron, guest stylist for GO24.7, wanted to showcase functional, balanced volume. To create the fullness, Padron shampooed the hair with GO24.7 Mint Thickening Shampoo. Then he skipped the conditioner, towel-dried the hair, and used a bit of UNITE 7Seconds Condition Leave In Detangler. After blow-drying the hair upward for added volume, Padron used a dime-sized dollop of GO24.7 Styling Cream to style the hair up and back.
