Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2014 NYC: Peter Som
Peter Som’s collection concept, which he describes as “surf style meets downtown,” was cleverly incorporated through hair and beauty looks backstage, with everything from textured hair to fresh faces to aqua nails. Eugene Souleiman, Wella Professionals global creative director of care and styling, designed the hair to appear undone with durable tension to evoke the concept of contradicting hard and soft edges. He described it as “loose, raw and cool,” with various pieces of hair pulled out to frame the look.
For this style, Souleiman started by washing and conditioning hair with Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner. Next, he applied Ocean Spritz liberally at the roots and to the ends of hair but did not comb through. He blow-dried hair upward at the root in circular motion to create natural volume. After drying, he pulled hair into a high ponytail and secured with an elastic band. Next, he twisted the ponytail and tied it into a knot, securing with several pins. Souleiman sprayed hair again with Ocean Spritz and blasted with a blow dryer to achieve more texture. He finished the look with a dime-size pump of Oil Reflections and applied to the roots in an upward motion for a shiny texture.
Makeup was led by Tom Pecheux, who used Mac Cosmetics to create a fresh-faced, wearable look. Blush was tapped on the cheeks with fingertips, and eyebrows were brushed up with brown mascara for fullness and to create a masculine edge. Gloss was tapped onto the lips.
For nails, Sunshine Outing created a look using Zoya blues and greens, including Alexa, an emerald shade, and Edie, an island blue hue. Zoya worked with Som to come up with a trio of new shades included these, as well as Stella, a coral, peachy shade. Zoya looked to create a seaside color palette described as “surf meets sand.”
