Fall has always been my favorite time of year. There's a sense of excitement in the air, and the promise of new beginnings. I made a big life change one September when I moved to New York City to start my publishing career. Now I'm about to make another as I take on the role of Beauty Group Director, Business Development and Education.
In this new position, I will be working closely with American Salon and beyond to find betters ways to serve you, our readers. Questex, the parent company of American Salon, American Spa, International Beauty Show New York and American Spa Expo, knows how important continuing education is to you and your salon staff. Even though it's early August as I write this, I've already been in meetings to plan IBS New York, which will take place April 29 to May 2, 2006. The educational tracks for next year's show are being scheduled now. I want to help bring a quality learning environment that's both exciting and useful. If you have ideas or suggestions for topics or educators you'd like to see, please e-mail me. As always, you are my biggest resource.
I will also be exploring new markets to bring you the latest need-to-know style and business information about these potential revenue sources. One area certainly worth watching right now is the multi-cultural segment. Knowing how to service clients with different hair textures is quickly moving from a specialty to a necessity. And I've heard from many of you that this is information you want and need. Within this sector, the Latino population is growing the fastest, with Hispanic women spending over $17 billion annually on beauty products. Special reports on emerging trends and services such as these will help open new sources of revenue in your salon. And rest assured: Whatever the topic, I remain dedicated to bringing you the information you need to run a profitable business.

Finally, I will continue to work closely with Mary Novitsky, American Salon's new editor in chief. Mary brings a vast knowledge of magazine publishing—her previous gigs have included positions at Family Circle, Woman's Day, Weight Watchers Magazine and Golf for Women—along with a fascination with the business side of beauty. We've worked together for the past two years, and I look forward to continuing our relationship, just as I look forward to staying in touch with all of you.
