Mercedes-Benz Fall 2013 Fashion Week: Diesel Black Gold

Diesel Black Gold filled the runway on Pier 57 on Tuesday with hardware-laden leather, treated wool curve-skimming separates and embellishments that oozed cool. Designer Andreas Melbostad, known for his black body-con pieces, put his talents to good use on the Fall 2013 collection, his debut for the chic, street-style line. Styling for hair and beauty turned to ideas directly from the street to accompany the tough, structured garments.

Redken Creative Consultant Guido fashioned a wet-looking ponytail and a new level of shine in hair. "The idea is they’ve just come out of the shower, they’re that cool that they can just put their hair in a ponytail and they look super great," he said. He first added handfuls of Redken Full Frame 07 mousse to damp hair, working it through, and gathered soaked locks into a ponytail at the nape of the neck with clips throughout to keep the shape. Guido then blow-dried with a diffuser until mousse set and finished with Control Addict 28 hairspray for strong hold. "It feels strong in a simplistic way," Guido said.

Pat McGrath, tapped to lead makeup, focused on eyes and relied heavily on mascara. "It's all about a black eye and lots of mascara," she said. She enhanced eyes with black eyeliner smudged into the lashline, two coats of mascara and purple shimmer applied under the eye. —Jennifer Barnes
