Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2013 NYC: Perry Ellis

Camo, tweed, paisley, wool and an overall outdoors-woodsy vibe dominated the Perry Ellis by Duckie Brown Fall/Winter 2013 collection, showcased at the Highline Stages Tuesday. To tastefully contrast with the clothes, Holli Smith for Oribe Hair Care styled the hair for a more precious and boyish appearance, taking inspiration from those ugly yearbook photos of yesteryear, “where your mother licks her hand and smears it on your head for a picture,” she told me.

First, she gave the hair a strong left-side part and brushed hair to make the head appear really flat and small with little to no volume. For an extra-dry, zero-shine look, Smith relied on Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray for hold, as well as Dry Texturizing Spray and Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray to reduce any wet sheen. To keep strand in place while they dried, they were pinned with barrettes. “The hair is supposed to be very perfect and solid, like a helmet,” Smith said.

Makeup by Ralph Siciliano also enhanced the boyish glow. “The boys are meant to look like boys, a no-makeup makeup look,” he said. The models’ faces were shaved before they headed over to Siciliano’s station.
