Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2014 NYC: Ruffian
Backstage was abuzz early Saturday morning at Lincoln Center before the reveal of Ruffian’s spring/summer 2014 collection, which played off the freshness and vulnerability of youth. To continue the theme, Catwalk by TIGI Global Director Nick Irwin worked to develop an innocent hair look, which he said could best be described as hair that’s been slept on. Drawing inspiration from Lady Caroline Blackwood, a well-known literary figure, he prepped hair with Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo, then scrunched hair while blow-drying to rough up the texture. Using Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hair Spray, he curled hair in sections with a curling iron and set the curls with duck-bill clips. Once the entire head was set, Irwin removed the clips and gently back-brushed hair with a paddle brush to achieve volume and texture. After hair was brushed out, he randomly placed duck-bill clips throughout hair and applied heat with a diffuser to create added texture. He finished the look with Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hair Spray and added shine with Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray.
Makeup was led by James Kaliardos, who used Mac Cosmetics and circled the eye with March Mist and added a few artificial lashes throughout. Kaliardos said he wanted the makeup to be a nod to the ’60s. Cheryl Natoli headed up nails, showing us backstage the colors Ruffian and Birchbox collaborated to create including Naked (nude), Delirium (purple), Fox Hunt (orange) and Hedge Fund (green). Natoli came up with three different versions of the nail look, all with Naked as the base and then one of the three aforementioned colors in a “U” around the edge of the nail with the bottom of the “U” at the nail base. The nail edge was cut into a square shape.
