Claire Pettibone’s 2011 show during New York Bridal Fashion Week on October 16 focused on a Victorian- and fairy-themed garden wedding. Models dressed as fairies greeted guests as they entered the event with trays of drinks before heading backstage to change into gowns from the collection. When lead hairstylist Tippi Shorter for Smart Heat learned she’d be working on a fairy theme for the show, she decided to incorporate many textures into the hair to create an over-the-top and voluminous style. “This is the look after the fairies have been rolling around in the grass and they’ve been naughty,” Shorter says. To put together the extra frizzy look, Shorter first used the Smart Heat 3/4” Nano Ceramic Curling Iron, Crimper and Triple Barrel Waver on the models’ fine, straight hair to create three different textured waves. Shorter says she loves working with the Smart Heat tools because they’re easy to use and the controls on the irons allow her to adjust the heat based on each model’s hair type. Shorter then sprayed the hair with Ojon Tunu Elastik Flexible Finishing Hairspray for movement and Ojon Extreme Hold Hairspray for volume. She finished by back-brushing all sections of the hair with a boar-bristle brush to build a blown-up, frizzy mane, and gave the models hair partings based on the accessories from Enchanted Atelier they would wear.
Lead makeup artist Janice Kinjo for Smashbox designed a look that featured forest green eye shadow and dramatic three-layered false eyelashes with feather extensions at the tips for a “fluttering” look. Kinjo applied a gold sparkling tint on the inner corners of the eyes for a pixie dust effect, and kept the rest of the face neutral with bronzy cheeks, dewy skin and nude lips. “I want this look to be all about the eyes,” Kinjo says.
