At last night’s Golden Globes, starlets wowed red carpet onlookers, embracing a variety of styling trends sure to become go-to looks for seasons to come. Here, top stylists share how you can execute these A-List dos on your salon clients.
THE TREND: Laid-back waves
Stars exuded a natural, less stylized sensuality with lightly curled locks cascading effortlessly against the backdrop of their soft silhouettes.
Nicole Kidman revealed an elegance of a different sort with her “Bohemian chic” tresses, created by celebrity hair stylist, David Babaii. He says he was driven to create a modern version of the effortless sultriness associated with Veronica Lake.
Get the look: Before drying, Babaii applied his own Miracle Oil Hair Elixir to Kidman’s locks to prevent heat damage and to add overall shine. To begin the soft blowout, use a medium sized T3 AntiGravity Barrel Brush. Next, add texture and movement to just the ends, by creating subtle “half moon” curls with a 1 ¼-inch T3 SinglePass Twirl Curling Iron for the finishing touches to these luscious locks.
Madonna may have won a Golden Globe last night, but she also gets an award for a well-executed simplistic hairstyle. Wella Professionals Celebrity Stylist Andy LeCompte, says he wanted to give her the easy, natural texture hair she had envisioned.
Get the look: The key to mastering this look is texture! First, rough dry hair to emphasize natural waves. Continue by misting strands with Wella’s Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray as a precaution to possible heat damage from the FHI platform 1-inch flat iron LeCompte used to manipulate her hair into soft S formations. For him, the key product in sealing in all the texture he worked to create was a finishing mist of Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray.
Jessica Biel graced the red carpet with soft waves to perfectly complement a delicate, blush gown. Celebrity hairstylist Davy Newkirk says he wanted to create a look that evoked an overall “relaxed vibe, while still remaining polished and sophisticated.”
Get the look: Biel’s fine hair needed a lift to create the volume Newkirk had in mind. He applied Alterna Bamboo Volume Weightless Whipped Mousse all over her damp hair and Alterna Bamboo Volume Uplifting Root Blast to just the roots before drying. To maintain her hair’s weightlessness, while adding some volume, he used a large round brush to smooth the cuticle before nearly drying all the way through. Just before completely dry, he added Alterna Bamboo Style Boho Waves Touseled Texture Mist to create texture before ending with a rough dry. Newkirk then sectioned Biel’s hair to alternate between wrapping and clamping, to prevent the look from becoming overdone. To keep the tousled tresses modern, Newkirk used Alterna Bamboo Style Moldable Texture Paste as he combed through the completed curls.
THE TREND: Glitzy Headbands
Nothing screams femininity like a little sparkle, which makes this year’s jeweled hairstyle addition seem more than fitting.
Charlize Theron may not have taken home a Golden Globe, but there is no doubt she boasted a winning style. The Best Actress nominee’s overall romantic glamour was elevated by her hair bling: a dramatic Cartier diamond headband. “I wanted to create an up-do that combined a bohemian, romantic, and casual mood, but was strong enough for the red carpet,” says stylist Enzo Angileri.
Get the look: Start by curling 2–inch sections of dry hair to enhance existing volume and waves. Next, mist the curls with Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray. Once dry, comb through the curls with a Moroccanoil Ionic Ceramic Paddle brush to create a more natural ease to the overall texture. Separate hair into three distinct sections as you sweep her whole mane to the left. Follow by rolling the first two into loose buns, pinning them down and spritzing them with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray. Then wrap the last section around the bun and pin it under the two other sections. Angileri says the key to making this whispy, unstructured up-do work is by preventing flyways with Moroccanoil Frizz Control.
Busy Philips dazzled spectators with a head-turning up-do with a twist. Her voluminous, ‘60s-inspired hairstyle was accented with a thin, plastic headband. Often associated with casual dos, this look is nothing short of marvelous in its imperfections. Stylist Chris McMillan says he used Wella Professionals products because “they are light, so the hair won’t get weighed down throughout the night.”

Michelle Williams also chose to take the red carpet flaunting an haute headband. The Golden Globe winner, also styled by Chris McMillan, modeled yet another ’60s glamour throwback, with a dressed up pixie. Reminiscent of Mia Farrow, Williams inspired McMillan to create “a retro ’60s combined with Flapper flair type of look that shows there’s still a lot of glamour and versatility with short hair.”

Emma Stone’s romantic, side-swept style appeared effortlessly dazzling. Returning to her auburn hue, Stone enlisted the help of celebrity stylist Mara Roszak to achieve her look of casual elegance. Roszak used a trio of MATRIX styling products to create the highly texturized foundation that gives this look its edgy sophistication.

Paula Patton stunned the crowd with her vibrant yellow, strapless gown. Such a statement must be paired with an equally fabulous hairdo. To achieve this goal, Patton enlisted the help of elite stylist Robert Steinken to complete her chic and sexy declaration as she presented at last night’s festivities. Steinken says he wanted to give her “the sophisticated sexiness of Brigitte Bardot, but modern and sexy without looking retro.”
Get the look: First, spray a small amount of Moroccanoil Frizz Control throughout damp hair. Follow by using Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to add luscious texture that softly holds the desired style, without looking stiff. Section off 2- to 3-inch pieces and use a round, medium-size Moroccanoil Ionic Ceramic Brush to create smooth, bouncy waves. Steinken suggests letting the brush stay in the hair 10–15 seconds after removing the heat to allow the hair to cool and set. With a 1-inch curling iron, wrap the hair around the iron in a spiral, starting at the root. Hold each section for 15–20 seconds, then remove and pin the curl with a clip or bobby pin to let it cool. A light spray of Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray will help set the style. Then, unpin and brush out the curls. To add height to the final look, backcomb the hair at the crown, starting 3–4 inches from the hairline. Finally, section hair behind the top of each ear and bring both sides together in the back with a twist and pin. Before finishing the style with Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray for an added touch of shine, spray one more shot of hairspray to ensure hold and take care of any loose pieces.
Kelly Osbourne rarely fails to deliver when it comes to shocking a crowd and last night was no exception. Stylist Judd Minter for Aim Artists, described her look as “upswept hair that brings classic beauty with an edge.” It wasn’t just the slicked back style, but the gray-violet hue that captured the masses’ attention.
Get the look: Before drying, take a dime-sized amount of Sebastian Professional Thickefy Foam and use your fingertips to incorporate it through strands, starting at the roots. Using a large round brush, blow dry until smooth and voluminous. To get the sleek finish of this look, switch to a boar bristle brush and pull the hair back into a tight, low ponytail. Twist the hair into a bun, pin it place, and finish with Sebastian Professional Shaper Zero Gravity hairspray for an all-night hold.
