The Winners of the Second Annual Hairbrained Video Awards are Announced

Winners of the second annual Hairbrained Video Awards were announced in New York City this March.

We created the Hairbrained Video Awards (HVA) two years ago to recognize the importance of educational and inspiring hairdresser-created video, and the entries keep getting better. Nominees from across the U.S., Canada and Europe were in attendance when we announced the winners at this year’s sold-out event at Arena NYC on March 8. Known for its artistic integrity, independent spirit and creative focus, a panel of respected industry leaders chose winners from 30 nominated videos. The judging panel consisted of Peter Gray, Lupe Voss, Richard Ashforth, Sam Brocato, Mark Hayes, Fabio Sementilli, Stephen Moody, Dimitrios Tsioumas, Kelly Ehlers, John Harms, Gordon Miller, Alec Watson, Traci Sakosits, Marianne Dougherty, Mark Pontrelli and Charlie Price.

This year, IBS New York, Wella, Sassoon Academy and American Salon again generously supported the HVAs. We are also grateful to have added the support of Millennium Systems International and the Professional Beauty Association. These sponsors have shown great vision in recognizing the importance of hairdresser-created video, and their continued support will allow us to grow the HVA’s program and reward talent in our community.

The $5,000 grand prize was awarded to Aaron Johnson and Tom Crawford for “Sinking,” named Hairbrained Video of the Year. Meanwhile, winners in six other categories were announced:

LoFi “One Cut (Endless Possibilities)” by Douglas McCoy

Behind the Scenes “MUSE Art House” by Marci Landgraf

Steps “Thunderbird” by Mike Varela

Even Further “Sinking” by Aaron Johnson and Tom Crawford

Coaching “Holding Your Scissors” by Christian Awesome

Humorous “On Set (’80s Creative)” by Ray Civello

If you would like to be eligible for a nomination at the 3rd annual HVAs (HVA3), simply upload a video that’s created to inspire and educate hairdressers to hairbrained.me. All videos uploaded by community members to hairbrained.me during 2015 are also eligible for consideration.

With the major success of this year’s awards, we are already planning next year’s event, which will be held at a much larger venue to accommodate the overwhelming demand for tickets. HVA3 will be held in association with IBS New York on Sunday, March 6, 2016. We can’t wait to see you there. ✂ —Randy Taylor and Gerard Scarpaci
