Mercedes-Benz Spring 2013 Fashion Week: Alexander Wang

The inspiration for the hair at Alexander Wang’s spring 2013 show at Pier 94 was futurism minimalism according to Redken’s Creative Consultant Guido. Gudio equipped himself with a challenge to use a ponytail but find new ways to make it different, fresh and new from it’s traditional appearance.

After applying Satinwear 02 to damp hair, blow-drying and creating a stark center part, the hair was secured at the bottom into a ponytail with an elastic. Guido then used Sultra’s new Bombshell Cone curling iron to create texture in the ponytail to contrast with the smooth top then used Fashion Works 12, which is a flexible hairspray, to hold everything in place but still allow natural movement. Finally, each model had a piece of black or white tape applied on top of the center part that cascaded about an inch onto their forehead for an updated, ponytail style just as Guido aspired to do. Lead Artist Diane Kendal also used the minimal look for inspiration, using neutral tones for the makeup and focused on flawless, matte skin although a handful of models were chosen for a luminous look with powder applied to the high points of the cheek to add interest and contrast. —Aja Edwards
