HEAVY METAL

INNU Salon is part of the Bumble and bumble network, and owner Tiffany Rasco sends her staff to Bb. University in New York City for technical training each year. Their latest collection includes strong, geometric shapes and perimeters that hold untamed texture in check. Color placement, which embraces the metallic, is unconventional but focused for optimal results. Says Rasco, "This hair announces its presence with authority—sexy authority." —M.D.

It's in the Bag

Angelina Jolie may wear her heart on her sleeve when it comes to activism, but now she's wearing her environmentalism on her shoulders, as well. The celeb and many other A-listers have been spotted toting Rebagz, a line of eco-friendly hand bags from Half the Sky Designs that is now sold in salons and spas. Made from recycled juice packs and nylon rice sacks, the lightweight bags come in such styles as clutches, totes, messenger bags and wallets. halftheskydesigns.com

NOT A PRETTY PICTURE

A must read for anyone in the business of beauty, Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry by Stacy Malkan (New Society Publishers, 2007) chronicles the quest that led a group of breast cancer activists and environmentalists to the offices of the world's largest cosmetics companies to question the use of dangerous chemicals in their products. Malkan critically examines the powerful $35 billion cosmetics industry, and explains how the choices the average consumer makes can help give it a makeover. —L.A.

"Give It 2 Me" by Madonna. "This song is fun, and it makes you feel like you can do anything!"

"Damaged" by Danity Kane. "I have worked with Aubrey from the group, and I got to hear this early. It's so sassy. All of my friends love to dance to this one."

"Rock With U" by Janet Jackson. "I put this on when I'm driving in the Hollywood Hills on a Sunday afternoon. It's so chill."

HERE COMES THE BRIDE

'Tis the season for weddings, so Mark Putnam, owner of Evolution Hair Design in Portland, OR, created a beautiful collection of hairstyles fit for any bride. "This look was inspired by the dress," he says. Putnam, assisted by stylist Drew Norton, created a French twist, then curled the hair at the top of the head with a 2-inch curling iron, setting the look with Enjoy hairspray. —L.A.

Armchair Education

In response to a growing demand for haircolor education that isn't specific to a particular haircolor brand, color accessories company PRODUCT CLUB now offers technique-based classes and DVDs. The DVD collection, Beyond Basic Foiling, comprises three volumes, each with two different techniques developed by the Product Club education team. Techniques include Soft Dimensions, which incorporates lowlights and highlights to restore natural tone and add brightness; Splicing, a contemporary way to create seamless highlights while maintaining depth in the root area; and Puddling, a technique that results in a subtle cascade of color that increases in intensity as it reaches the ends of the hair. productclub.com —L.M.

HOLLYWOOD LAND

Tom Julian, president of the brand consultancy firm the Tom Julian Group, checks out The Americana at Brand.

With its outdoor setting incorporating parks, fountains, a town square, pedestrian walkways and even a trolley car, The Americana at Brand is the newest West Coast destination for a unique shopping experience. Some liken it to The Grove at Farmer's Market—no surprise, since it shares the same developer, Rick Caruso of Caruso Affiliated.

In addition to shopping attractions, the 15.5-acre site in Glendale, CA, is home to The Residences—more than 230 lofts and townhouses and resort-style swimming pools and fitness centers. One key attraction is The Grand Lobby, which feels like a hotel lobby but is set in an indoor/outdoor corridor. The concierge housed here supports shoppers with everything from loyalty-rewards programs to foreign-language assistance. The Americana also boasts an events calendar that reads more like a cultural guide to arts and entertainment than a mall promotional posting, with contemporary activities like Sunday morning yoga classes on the park lawn with Lululemon Athletica, jazz singers in the park on Friday nights and movies shown at Pacific Theatres, which operates 18 movie screens.

Here, some of the must-browse shopping destinations:

Barneys New York CO-OP is Barneys' edgier concept, now with multiple locations around Los Angeles. This outpost carries DVF, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Marc by Marc Jacobs for women, plus Paul Smith and Helmut Lang for men, in a loftlike environment.

XXI, aka Forever 21, offers color-coordinated separates with graphic prints. Men have their own department in the multilevel store, and competitive prices continue to entice shoppers of all ages.

New brands from familiar operators include Free People by Urban Outfitters, offering vintage-chic looks in an all-American setting; Ruehl from Abercrombie & Fitch, a townhouse concept from New York City's Greenwich Village selling signature logo apparel and accessories for him and her; and Martin + Osa from American Eagle, which is targeted to those over 28 and designed to be authentic and adventurous. Soon-to-open is Gilly Hicks, a lingerie destination also from Urban Outfitters.

International operators include Spain's Custo Barcelona; Sweden's H&M; Russia's 16-year-old fashion flavor of the moment, Kira Plastinina, who plans to open more than 30 stores in the United States this year; Australia's Peter Alexander; and Giorgio Armani's A/X Armani Exchange. Beauty players include The Art of Shaving, Kiehl's, Bare Escentuals and Bokaos Aveda Lifestyle Salon.
