Tom Julian, senior vice president and director of trends for ad agency McCann Erickson, explores summer sidewalk shopping in the West Village.
During the '90s, there was only one cool destination neighborhood for shoppers to descend upon every weekend in the summer: SoHo. With its loft buildings and historic storefronts, major brands and designer labels unveiled new ways to shop and be seen along West Broadway and Spring and Greene streets.
But now Bleecker Street in the West Village is the latest "must shop" corridor in the Big Apple for both locals and tourists. This quaint neighborhood street, with its tree-lined sidewalks and authentic townhomes, has been compared to the Left Bank of Paris. Designer Marc Jacobs first brought attention to Bleecker when he opened two shops on the street in 2000, and the neighborhood has been booming ever since.
The bounty of boutiques on Bleecker includes Ralph Lauren's separate men's, women's and Double RL stores, as well as the visually distinct Cynthia Rowley and James Perse shops. (Perse just opened a second store for men.) For women, specialty icons Intermix and Olive + Bette's offer modern fashion labels in a hip setting. Juicy Couture retails its entire collection in addition to men's and babies' collections. Be on the lookout for a new concept from Coach's lifestyle label, Legacy, coming soon.
Of the street's international brands, London's Lulu Guinness and Mulberry are the landmark accessories stores. Italy's Brunello Cucinelli merchandises the finest cashmere offerings for him and her. The U.K.'s Reiss brings together modern head-to-toe looks for men and women. Miguelina Gambaccini's first store presents colorful creations for women, and France's Bonpoint boasts the ultimate in newborn and toddler dressing.
For discerning diners, A.O.C. provides the classic French bistro experience, while the hip Waverly Inn is the newest see-and-be-seen dining destination, located just off Bleecker on Bank Street. Magnolia Bakery satisfies the sweet tooth—the cupcakes are a must, but be prepared to wait in line.
When it comes to services, Salima Optique stocks trendy eyewear. The Robert Kree Salon boasts a natural setting and outdoor garden with signature services. Spa Belles is the destination for body and skincare treatments and at Bond No. 9, the fragrance outpost from Laurice Rahme, you can even pick up a perfume named for the street itself.

The Music Man
John Heffner, CEO/President of Creative Nail Design, is a die-hard rock 'n' roll fan, who has more than 20,000 songs on his five iPods.
The first concert he ever saw was Styx. The year was 1977; the place was Boise, ID, his hometown. The first famous musician he ever met was Mark Lindsay, lead singer of the '60s pop band Paul Revere & the Raiders. "I met him when I was a kid. He was from Boise, too," says self-professed rock 'n' roll addict John Heffner, who fulfills his duties as CEO/President of Creative Nail Design when he's not attending concerts or hanging out with musicians. So does he remember his second star sighting? "Jackson Browne," he says without missing a beat. "I actually ran into him at an airport in Boise in the late '70s. He was a perfect gentleman." For anyone who knows Heffner, none of this is surprising. So far he's met more than 200 rock 'n' roll icons from Stevie Wonder to Sting just by going up to them and introducing himself. "I'm always very polite," he says.
With Paul McCartney at the Grammy Awards
At the Grammy Awards a couple of years ago, Heffner approached Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones during a commercial break and struck up a conversation. He also spent 30 minutes with Paul McCartney in his dressing room, discussing land mine removal, among other things. His personal hero? Dave Grohl, formerly of Nirvana and now with the Foo Fighters. "I have a profound appreciation for his craft," says Heffner, who has visited Grohl several times since their first meeting. "He also has an incredible sense of humor." Two years ago Heffner was introduced to Maria Holly, Buddy Holly's widow. "She took me into this special room filled with his suits, lots of color photographs, even his horn-rim glasses," says Heffner. "She doesn't show these things to that many people."

This month in Las Vegas, Heffner will receive the Spirit of Life Award from the City of Hope in recognition of his philanthropy and many contributions to the beauty industry. Naturally, this will not be your typical rubber-chicken dinner. Heffner actually managed to talk singer-songwriter Patty Griffin—her songs have been recorded by everyone from the Dixie Chicks to Emmylou Harris—into performing.
