Elements of Style
Jennifer Lopez's Soft Waves
Use a smoothing balm before blow-drying the hair, suggests Balding. Next, use a large-barrel curling iron to create soft waves. "A light volumizing hairspray is all you'll need to hold the style in place," she says.
Kate Hudson's Hippie Chic 'Do
"Work some mousse through the hair to give it body and hold, then use a round brush to blow-dry the hair," says Garrison, who also recommends using a medium-barrel curling iron to create loose waves, like those seen here on Kate Hudson. Finish with a spritz of light-hold hairspray and a small amount of shine serum or shine spray.
Katherine Heigl's Elegant Updo
Flannigan styled Heigl's hair for the 27 Dresses premiere. After blow-drying the hair, he pulled half of it back into a low ponytail, which he curled with a 1-inch curling iron. Next, he created a messy, structured bun from the ponytail and used his fingers to work the sides of the hair back with Joico Design Collection Gloss Wax. You could also try a spray gloss, but remember to keep the sections pieced out.
Scarlett Johansson's Flirty, Feminine Style
Because you want to get big hair right from the start, Balding suggests applying a volumizer or root-boosting spray before blow-drying the hair off the face. Then, tease the hair lightly at the roots and pin it back at the nape, using a medium-hold hairspray to keep everything in place. "What you don't want," says Balding, "is a look that's rock solid."

Victoria Beckham's Trendsetting Bob
Mark Garrison suggests applying a straightening balm before blow-drying the hair, then using a flat iron on it. To finish, use a pomade or wax to piece out the ends.
Mena Suvari's Short Crop
"Work a little gel into the hair to provide direction and hold," Garrison says, "then use your fingers while drying the hair with a blow-dryer." Garrison also recommends using wax on the hair to provide texture and definition. "You could also use a paste instead of a wax, which isn't as heavy and can be used on damp or dry hair. The point is, you want flexible hold."
