American Crew to Release New Collection for 2009

Hair gurus Craig Hanson, director of artistic services, Colomer Salon Division, and Paul Wilson, American Crew artistic director, came together at Pier 59 Studios West in Santa Monica, CA, late last summer to collaborate with a team on a photo shoot for the company's much-anticipated 2009 collection. "This year's release features overtly classic shapes with deep parts and disconnection off the perimeter," said Wilson about the collection, which will debut exclusively in American Salon's February 2009 issue. "We've lived through that whole flat iron thing where we tried to control hair," Hanson said. "Now we're letting hairstyles have personality and spontaneity by showing more wave and texture." —K.D.

National Cosmetology Association Elects New Board of Directors

The National Cosmetology Association (NCA), the largest organization of salon professionals in the world, elected a new board of directors for the 2009/2010 term. Since its inception in 1921, the NCA's mission has been to ensure that working salon professionals have the tools and resources available to create career success with integrity. In August, the NCA will host SalonLife '09, which will include top-notch education and workshops, exhibits, creative competitions and presenters such as personal finance guru Suze Orman. "I love how much the NCA helps working cosmetologists in so many ways with providing education; representing members' interests for local, state and national legislative and regulatory issues; and now by creating SalonLife to help them improve their professional and personal well-being," said new President Mark Goodman. —L.M.

Klorane Supports U.S. Troops During the Holidays

Klorane Cosmetics, a division of France-based Pierre Fabre Dermo-Cosmétique, donated 8,000 bottles of their Ultra Soft, Zen Spirit and Morning Wake-up shower gels to U.S. troops for the holiday season. Klorane, which produces a range of natural hair and body products, partnered with two Texas-based nonprofit organizations, Christmas For Our Troops and the U.S. Wounded Soldier Foundation, which provide individual Christmas boxes filled with various gifts and necessities to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. "We are proud to be able to make this contribution of Klorane products to the men and women who diligently protect and serve our country and hope this small gesture shows that we are thinking of them and appreciate all that they do," said Thierry Chenain, president of Klorane. —L.M.

PureOlogy Founders Honored by City of Hope

The Professional Salon Industry Council for City of Hope will honor PureOlogy founders Cheryl and Jim Markham with the Spirit of Life Award on July 20, 2009 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas during Cosmoprof North America. City of Hope will present their top philanthropic honor to the couple for their humanitarian and business achievements. The Markhams have devoted more than 15 years of support to cancer research and treatment programs, with a particular emphasis on ovarian cancer. "We are honored to receive this award from an institution that is tirelessly working to make cancer a curable and ultimately preventable disease," said Jim, founder and president of Markham Enterprises.
