Drake's NYC Barber Shares Holiday Tips & Trends

Rich Mendoza, barber to celebs like Drake and owner of Filthy Rich NYC shops, knows how to keep his barbershop busy during the holiday season. Here, The Art of Shaving partner shares his marketing tips and the trends he expects to see more of in the new year.

What are your top marketing tips for barbers during the holidays?

Update and use Google Maps. Most people use Google to search for anything—so if they Google "barbershop," make sure your page has updated pictures, hours and responses to reviews.

Also, I have someone create video content for my team, highlighting their cuts so they can use it on their social and for our barbershop's social. It’s important for people to see various styles and to see you in action so they can really see what you can do.

Which styles are you seeing more of this holiday season?
People are growing their hair and coming to the barbershop less often. They want something low maintenance. They may not go into the office as often and aren’t going out like they use to, so they got used to getting haircuts less. Unfortunately, this is one of the effects of the pandemic.

Which trends do you expect to see more of in 2022?
People are growing their undercuts. We are starting to blend the undercut more and growing it to that K-pop style. A lot of guys are also experimenting more with color from white to bright neons. We also offer color at our Queens location—my older sister provides this service, so it’s something different from other barbershops.
