Better Business: Salvatore Fodera Shares His Secrets to Success

Shear Persistence

Salvatore Fodera has a long list of titles. The OMC Hairworld and OMC Prestige Club world president and CEO is also the owner of Salon Fodera, a luxury salon in the five-star St. Regis Hotel in New York City. The Sicilian-born OMC World Hairdressing Champion garners success wherever he goes and continues to set the bar high for other hair professionals. “My mission is to elevate the standards of our professional salon industry worldwide by providing advanced educational programs and by promoting competition as a career-building skill through OMC,” Fodera says.

Fodera started his career as a hairdresser at age 12 in Mazara Del Vallo in Sicily, Italy. He moved to the United States and eventually opened Salon Fodera. Through discipline and hard work, he became a competitor, then a trainer and juror and was eventually elected OMC world president in 2004. OMC, established in 1946, is a worldwide organization open to all hairdressing federations that hosts the World Hairdressing Championship. It’s comprised of three official delegates from each member country, who have the right to vote and hold top positions on the zone and world boards; the board of directors is managed by the OMC world president and CEO, Fedora.

Since becoming OMC president, Fodera has left most of the operations of his salon in the hands of his two sons—Gianni, hairstylist and world champion, and Vincent, hairstylist and educator—while he travels the world, building the future of OMC heritage in the world of competition, fashion and education.

About the secret to his success, Fodera says, “Ultimate persistence becomes a way of life, but it’s not where it begins. To develop the mental strength, you must first want something. You have to want something so much that it becomes a passion.”

Here, Fodera offers five simple tips to help turn persistence into habit:

1. Have a clearly defined goal. It must be something you are emotionally involved with and want very much.

2. Have a clearly established plan that you can begin working on immediately.

3. Make an irrevocable decision to reject any and all negative suggestions.

4. Establish a mastermind group of one or more people who will encourage, support and assist you wherever possible.

5. What do you dream of with your life? Do it! Begin now and never quit. Be persistent! K.M.
