John Harms on Keeping the Momentum Going

John, my team is starting to feel burnt out. How can I help keep the momentum going for the rest of the year?

The end of the year is a busy time. Between personal family time and the holiday crunch at work, it’s easy to feel burnt out before the New Year.  There are a few things you can do to keep the momentum going at your salon or spa and keep your employees happy.

One of the most important thing you can do for your team is to make sure you have plenty of help with all hands on deck. There is nothing worse than being overworked and underappreciated. Make sure you have your employee schedule planned well in advance with seasonal help, if needed. It is widely accepted that the holidays are busy, but allowing your employees to still have a work-life balance during the holidays will make all the difference in their motivation and performance.

Constantly keeping an open line of communication with your team during this last push will help keep your team on track. Check in a few times a week so your team knows they’re on top of hitting their goals and keeping your clients happy. Don’t forget to have fun; Fun is empowering and infectious. A positive and empowered team will be more likely to push through the harder times, because they love what they do and are having fun while doing it.

While I’m sure there are plenty of holiday celebrations going on, it never hurts to celebrate your team’s little milestones, too. A little incentive or friendly competition never hurts! Set a few goals holiday-focused for the month of December and create rewards that will be given when each goal is met. Celebrating achievements will not only help motivate your employees, but also help keep your work environment enjoyable and upbeat.

Don’t forget to thank your team for all of their hard work. Every employee wants to feel important and like they add value to your business. In addition, making note of, and commenting on a job well done or giving a “thank you” even for the smallest tasks, go a long way, especially during the busy holiday season.

Before you know it, it will be January, and the holiday rush will be over. Even though there may be a business lull, January is the perfect time to reflect on the accomplishments of 2016, set your 2017 goals, and discover new ways to motivate your employees.
