Styling How-To: Bottleneck Fringe with Face-Framing Layers

“The timeless elegance of face-framing layers with a trendy bottleneck fringe exemplifies the beauty of simplicity of one of today’s most popular looks,” says Teresa Romero, Sam Villa artistic director and Jose Luis Salon art/ed director.

The beauty of simplicity—fresh, healthy, uncomplicated. It starts with prescribed products to create the optimal canvas for face-framing accents with just the right amount of bend created with temperature controlled thermal tools that respect hair. Here's how to get the look:

  1. Start with moisturizing products, like Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner.
  2. Apply a volume booster, like Redken Volume Maximizer at the root, and Redken Align 12 through the mids and ends for smoothing. Be sure to use products with heat protection and comb through for even distribution.
  3. Section hair into five to six horizontal sections.
  4. Start blow-drying in the nape, brushing hair up and away from the scalp when drying with a paddle brush.
  5. Once hair is 75 to 85 percent dry, switch to a round brush like the Sam Villa Artist Series Spiral Thermal Brush. Continue to create volume and smoothness when drying.
  6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until all the sections are completely dry.
  7. Use a Marcel iron, like the Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Iron, and a 1.5-inch wand to curl hair away from face. Make two to three curls on each side and allow to cool before brushing.
  8. Use hands to form a bottleneck shape into fringe.
  9. Finish by smoothing hair a boar bristles to add shine and polish.
