The role of the salon assistant is one of the most important and core positions in the industry. Assistants are the backbone of the client experience and there are many responsibilities and career choices that lie ahead of you. The first and most important step is finding the right salon to work in. If you are still in beauty school, or if you are recently graduated, choosing your first salon to work in is a major decision. Unfortunately, I have seen many assistants become trapped in salons that don’t offer any growth opportunities. They are often promised the world by the owner just to spend years doing the same thing. Before you land any job, research the salon and make sure they are a good fit for you and your goals. Interview other assistants, stylists and see if any of them have gone through a training program and are doing well in the salon. If you see that there's no room for growth, no culture and nothing but a hot mess, run away and keep searching for the right place.
