Embrace and Nourish Curls with Moroccanoil

Sure, there are lots of curly clients that want you to blow out and smooth down their natural waves, curls and kinks. But, with more and more clients embracing their natural texture, stylists need to fully understand how to perfectly enhance each amazing texture.

To ensure that you are ready and able to treat every curl type that walks through your salon doors, Moroccanoil Artistic Director, Kevin Hughes (@hairbyeleven) is here with his tips and tricks for beautifying curly hair.

Q. What are the different curly hair types?

A. There are three main categories and they are: wavy, curly and kinky.

Q. What ingredients should curly haired women be looking out for?

A. Curly haired women should be looking for ingredients that are moisturizing to the hair, like panthenol and jojoba, as well as strengthening ingredients, like vegetable proteins.

Q. How often do you recommend washing hair if it’s curly?

A. It varies depending on the thickness of the hair—for fine, curly hair, skip at least one to two days; for thicker, coarse hair, four to seven days.

Q. What is the best way to cleanse curls?

A. Make sure that you are using a good shampoo and conditioner like the Moroccanoil Curl Enhancing Shampoo and Conditioner, which will maintain the strength and health of your client's hair as well as moisturize it. The Moroccanoil Curl Cleansing Conditioner is an amazing product that can be used in place of a daily shampoo and conditioner, it will leave more moisture in the hair without stronger cleansing.

Q. How can you refresh curly hair without washing it?

A. On days where your client doesn't have time to wash, or they just washed the day before and they don’t want to dry their hair out from over washing it, try Moroccanoil Curl Re-energizing SprayThe spray is light, so it won't weigh the hair down, while it still has the ability to smooth the curls, so they look shiny and not frizzy. Spray hair and twirl the individual strands around your finger to refresh the curls.

Q. What is the best way to protect curls before straightening?

A. Make sure that you towel blot the hair and let it air dry as much as possible before drying. If you try to dry soaking wet hair, you'll spend twice the amount of time and heat on their curls. Also, be sure to use Moroccanoil Heat Styling Protection in their hair to keep the curls healthy, and Moroccanoil Blow-dry Concentrate to cut the drying time.

Q. What are some tips for hair to hold a curl in high humidity, heat wave and rain?

A. After you are done styling, do not touch the hair. When humidity hits the hair, there is a small amount of moisture that sits on the strands. Touching the hair or running fingers through it will spread the moisture and lead to excess frizz.
