A Talk with NAHA Makeup Artist of the Year Nominee Florencia Taylor

The North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) honor the professional salon industry’s top talent each year during the Cosmoprof North America show at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. In anticipation of this year’s event, we talk to the nominees who share their inspiration, excitement and advice.

Nominee: Florencia Taylor

What was the inspiration for the collection?

My primary source of inspiration came as a reflection of the time we are living in right now—a time when many of us are searching and trying to find ourselves, or we are constantly looking for the approval of others by trying to fit a mold. That common way of thinking inspired me to make a collection that challenged that, a collection where there was a mix of genders, where there was no mold to be filled.

How did you create the looks?

I knew the faces that I wanted to work with for this collection, so I created the looks based on their unique features.

What inspired you to enter NAHA?

My faith is the cornerstone of my life. Anything that I decide to do or have the desire to do starts with praying and surrendering it into God’s hands. I have always asked God to guide my hands and to show me what he wanted me to do, to open the door for me to do it and then I will always show up and do my best.

What was your reaction when you heard you were a nominee?

I started crying and I felt so blessed and grateful to be in the finals as one of the five best North American Makeup Artists. Hearing that news made my heart feel so full.

What advice do you have for others who are thinking of entering NAHA?

My advice is to boldly step outside of your comfort zone and create something that challenges you and is different than anything you usually do. But you should also keep your individual style and staying true to yourself, because your unique gifts and talents are what make the difference.
