Alicia Keys' Billboard Music Awards 2012 How-to

Alicia Keys' hairstyle for Billboard Music Awards 2012.

If you tuned into the Billboard Music Awards last night on ABC, then it’s likely you saw Alicia Keys grace the screen wearing a black Azzedine Alaia Couture gown with a gorgeous hairstyle to match, and American Salon got the scoop on how to recreate this updo rope braid just for you.

First Keys’ hair was shampooed and conditioned with the smoothing collection from HAIR by Tippi Shorter. Next, Ojon Revitalizing Mist was sprayed to detangle and protect Keys’ hair from the hot Vegas sun. Her hair was blown smooth then gathered into a high ponytail and Pliable Hairdressing Wax was used to smooth the hair and prevent any flyaways.

Next, using a small amount of Control on the fingertips, Keys’ ponytail was braided with extra human hairpieces added in to make the braid bigger. Finally, the braid was wrapped around, crown-like, and then secured with bobby pins to ensure a lasting hold. —Aja Edwards
