All About Yves

In her latest collection, Australia’s Jo Smith pairs masculine styles with feminine finishes.

There’s something to be said about masculine versus feminine disunion, and Toni & Guy salon owner, art director and educator Jo Smith shines a spotlight on it in her Yves collection. Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent and the restless 1920s, the images—seen exclusively on these pages—push the boundaries, creating new artistic forms of inspiration. To get the hair just right for the shoot, Smith relied on a variety of techniques, including setting, tonging and creating French rolls. Photography was another key element for Smith, who originally intended to capture the collection in black and white. “As the collection unfolded, the images were so much stronger in color, and this provided another element to the masculine versus feminine dichotomy,” Smith says. —Desiree Cole >
