Aveda Congress 2011: An Event for Education and Artistry

In early October, 4,000 stylists, haircolorists, makeup artists, students and salon owners gathered at the Minneapolis Convention Center for Aveda Congress 2011. The event, this year called "Pow Wow," boasted technical and creative presentations from international master artists and was designed to celebrate the art of hairdressing.

The Aveda Global Artistic Team presented Jewels of the Earth, a collection inspired by the 1920s and '70s; Aveda Guest Artists and redChocolate President David Adams debuted the Aveda Full Spectrum Pure Pigments line, launching in 2012; Aveda Guest Artist Jon Reyman led a team of students representing 57 Aveda Institutes in cutting runway styles for everyday wear; the team from Van Michael Salons presented textured looks for men and women; Aveda Men Purefessional Tim Howard focused on masculine looks utilizing Aveda Men; Peter Gray demonstrated a live photo shoot onstage, inspired by his trip to tsunami-ravaged Fukushima, Japan; and Guest Artist Tippi Shorter created dramatic looks from edgy to wearable. Presentations were also led by Ray Civello and the Aveda Canada team and Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders, whose evening performance featured two collections, one that focused on earth, air, infinity, fire and water and another called Trashionista.

"It was gratifying and inspiring to see such extraordinary work as was presented at Congress. Aveda artists are teachers, creators and trendsetters. The originality and technical feats witnessed at Congress speak to their tremendous skills and remarkable dedication to their craft." —Kristen Heinzinger
