Barbershop Politics

Taylor Mae'd Barber Shop, Buffalo, NY

I just came across this CNN.com article on men talking about politics in the barbershop. While we're often taught that politics are a taboo topic, at Taylor Mae'd Barber Shop in Buffalo, NY, owner Jack Quavis encourages his clients to speak their mind—and he even captures them on tape. His personal Web site, All Buzzed Up, displays these videos to give viewers from all over a good cross-section of opinions about politics and current events. As I learned when researching our October article on men's salons across the country ("The Guys Have It," page 62), this idea of men gathering in the barbershop to talk about news and ideas goes all the way back to ancient Rome—think they were all getting the Caesar/Clooney cut back then?!
