Better Business: Helping Hands

Stylists at Salon Caru in Hoboken, NJ, held a recent charitable event called Cancer Blows that helped unite the employees as well as establish a philanthropic identity for the business in the community. The entire staff dedicated a full day’s earnings from discounted blow-outs to help a stylist’s mother pay for cancer treatments. Raising more than $5,000, the day was such a success that Meghan Rafferty, Salon Caru manager, says the salon will hold more Cancer Blows events and fundraisers on a broader scale with other salons. “It’s one day out of the year where it’s not about money or vanity but about something that’s bigger and much more important: a person’s life,” Rafferty says. —J.B.
