Big Fish, Small Pond

Home to the oldest Amish settlement in the United States, Lancaster, PA, is a place locals and visitors alike enjoy for its slower-paced lifestyle and time-honored traditions. It's also home to Luxe, a salon that takes pride in its eco-friendly environment and fashion-forward hair services.

"I wanted to open a salon that was both unique and upscale in the Lancaster area," says owner Ana Kitova. After doing much research on implementing ecological business practices into the salon and how to offer clients something different, Kitova, with the help of co-owner Lani Todd, opened the 2,000-square-foot full-service salon and day spa in July 2008.

Even though the salon is less than a year old, spa services like facials and massage have already proven to be popular. Most of the business, however, comes from hair services, including cuts, styling and color, according to Kitova. In addition to spa and bridal parties, which are also popular at Luxe, men's services and Princess Parties for young girls' birthdays are available and attract an even wider clientele to the salon.

Located in an old factory, Luxe features a modern minimalist decor with comfortable styling chairs and shampoo bowls and floor-to-ceiling windows that provide natural light. The spa side features soft chocolate brown and green shades, while the salon side boasts bamboo whitewashed floors, light blue and orange walls and dark cherry wood.

While clients appreciate the quality of services they receive at Luxe, they also appreciate the salon's commitment to the environment. "All lightbulbs and fixtures in the salon and spa are energy efficient, and we recycle everything," Kitova says. "People want so badly to do something to protect the environment, so they like the idea of supporting us. We like not only pampering people and making them happy, but also doing something good for the world." —NICOLE PALMIERI
