Big Fish, Small Pond

Williamsville, NY, named after Jonas Williams, an early settler to the village, is considered one of the wealthiest suburbs of Buffalo. In addition to historical landmarks and trendy clothing stores and restaurants, it is also home to Chez Ann Salon & Day Spa, a hip salon offering a sophisticated atmosphere and services.

When Chez Ann owner Ann Freer-Caroll opened her salon in 1986, it was in a 750-square-foot space and had a staff of only three. Today, the salon is 3,000 square feet and boasts a staff of 38. The salon has grown so much through the years that Freer-Caroll decided to open a second location in downtown Buffalo a few years ago.

Freer-Caroll credits much of her salon's success to its focus on education and keeping up with the trends. "We are in an industry that is constantly changing," Freer-Caroll says. "It's not just recommended, it's a requirement for stylists here to receive education." Bumble and bumble and Aveda provide classes, and an in-salon training program for junior designers allows novices to train directly with the salon's network educator before working on the floor.

Offering all hair services, in addition to laser hair removal, facials, massage, manicures and pedicures, Chez Ann provides one-stop shopping for residents of Williamsville. "We have infant clients, 85-year-old clients and every age in between," Freer-Caroll says. Clients can expect more than just top-notch stylists when they enter the salon. The warm and comfortable atmosphere provides them with a sense of home, which is exactly what Freer-Caroll wanted when creating the salon. "Chez means 'house' in French, so the name means Ann's House," Freer-Caroll says. "I want my salon to feel more like a house, and to have clients feel invited and comfortable being here." —NICOLE PALMIERI
