Big Fish, Small Pond

Located approximately 90 miles north of New York City, Pine Bush, NY, is a hamlet in the Town of Crawford in Orange County, NY. Over the last 10 years, the number of businesses and people in the area has nearly tripled, as many city dwellers continue to move there. When these residents need a taste of the city, they visit Pineapple Day Spa for all their hair, skin, body and nail needs.

Owner Andrea Tompkins realized her long-held dream of opening her own salon when Pineapple Day Spa opened its doors in 1996. As a hairstylist in Pine Bush for more than 25 years, Tompkins has a strong commitment to the salon industry and a great relationship with the community. "As one of the first day spa and salons in the area, we had the unique opportunity to offer wellness, beauty and relaxation under one roof," Tompkins says. "Our longevity is respected by our community and clients."

Tompkins, who co-owns the 2,500-square-foot salon and spa with her husband, Ross, decided to name it after the Grand Pineapple Beach Resort in Antigua, with the hope that clients would get the same welcoming feeling in their salon that Tompkins and her husband did on their trip to the Caribbean. To help create this inviting environment, they insisted on an open floor plan to make every space accessible to clients and to encourage them to explore. The salon and spa features a variation of soothing chocolate brown tones accented by trimmings, curtains and pillows in an energizing lime shade. Furnishings are simple, and the use of black and stainless steel throughout creates a modern vibe. In addition, the Try Me Bar allows clients to try products out before making a purchase.

Clients, who consist mostly of "supermoms" juggling a career and family as well as city-commuter residents, appreciate the warm atmosphere at Pineapple Day Spa and its commitment to serving the community. Says Tompkins, "We have always prided ourselves on being a family-owned and -operated business, and on our connection to the community. Our clients become part of our family, experiencing a business relationship that goes beyond their treatment." —NICOLE PALMIERI
