Cherry Petenbrink and Mika Fowler Team Up for a Day of Styling

Earlier this month, celebrity colorist Cherry Petenbrink and celebrity stylist Mika Fowler took over Eiji salon in New York City for a day of styling and color services to welcome in the upcoming fall season, and I got the opportunity to have my tresses done by these two lovely ladies.

Petenbrink has years of experience in the salon and hair industry, beginning at cosmetology school in Aberdeen, South Dakota to owning a salon for 10 years in Georgia and now most recently she’s resided in California, gaining the appeal of celebrity clients and most recently serving as the color consultant for The Hunger Games (2012).

When I arrived, Petenbrink consulted with me on my new highlights, which I haven’t had any color services in nearly 10 years. She was confident in a copper red hue and described her technique-of-the-day as the new ombré: internal lightened effects within the hair that brighten from the inside out for a warmer, softer look.

After the color processed, Fowler got her hands on me to work her magic. Fowler who’s well-known for her dry cutting techniques, has worked with the CW’s a-listers Anna Lynne McCord from 90210 and Nina Dobrev from The Vampire Diaries, actresses Rosario Dawson, Emmanuelle Chriqui and most recently Olivia Munn. For me, Fowler worked in Wella Professional product to prep the hair then used a large round brush and worked through the hair to blow-dry it straight. She went back with a flat iron to perfect the sleek strands and finished with a light spritz of hairspray to hold it all in place.

The end results were great! The highlights were subtle but still noticeable, which was a much easier transition and the styling was very different then how I normally wear my hair but was a great change; it’s always fun to do something different! —Aja Edwards
