Cover Look

Going Grunge

WHO & WHAT: Photographer Heath Grout, who doubles as TIGI creative director, USA, teamed up with his fellow gifted forces on the TIGI New York Artistic Team—TIGI Educational Director, USA, Thomas Osborn, and Artistic Directors Christopher Catanese and Adriana Papaleo—to create this month’s cover feature. “In addition to crafting hair collections, this talented group serves as our core educators in the Big Apple,” Grout says. WHERE: The shoot was held at the TIGI Advanced Academy in New York City’s Soho district. WHY: The one-day, three-model session was staged to commemorate the reinvention of Catwalk by TIGI. ROCK OF AGES: Imagery was laced with a grunge feeling and ’90s influences, all captured in black and white. “Although a lot of our inspiration was tattered and deconstructed, it still held an air of beauty,” Grout says. ROUGHING IT: Texture played a starring role in the collection’s edgy hairstyles. “We manipulated the hair, coaxing strands into tighter curls and then deconstructing them,” says Catanese. PRIZED POSSESSIONS: Catwalk by TIGI Curlesque Defining Serum and Curls Rock Amplifier, as well as Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo, were necessities on shoot day. “The dry shampoo allowed me to create unique texture and was a must-have for transitioning from look to look,” Catanese says. FINISH LINE: When the final picture was taken, the crew congratulated one another, then promptly got busy organizing their gear for a cosmetic shoot for TIGI’s South American Division the next day. ✂ —Kelley Donahue

Hair How-to

To create this style that’s a bit relaxed and lived-in, Christopher Catanese prepped the hair with Catwalk by TIGI Curlesque Shampoo and Conditioner before creating a cocktail of Curl Defining Serum and Curls Rock Amplifier, applying the blend to the hair and using a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute. Next, he used his hands like a diffuser, drying the hair gently to avoid creating frizz, before misting the tousled design with Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray.
