Daniel Roldan Photo Journal: Natural Movement

In this Digital Photo Journal series, Matrix Artistic Director Daniel Roldan shares his personal views and storied photos as he travels across world educating artists on his craft, sharing tips, tools and techniques to creating inspired hairstyles – all while documenting via Instagram.

The inspiration...Marco Island, Florida

One of the benefits of traveling is that you’re always experiencing new sites and sensations, which can be very inspirational. As a photographer, I capture these scenes and moments; but as a hairstylist, I strive to create looks that show my inspirations that can transcend beyond a photograph. For me, hair and photography go hand-in-hand as forms of expression that complement each other, telling stories about my travels. When I’m out and about, I’m always looking for different shapes, colors and infrastructures that serve as inspirations which are then reflected in my work.

The Looks (A-C)... Wild and Free

Marco Island is such a magical place where you can feel completely liberated and are genuinely welcomed.  While taking in the nature around me from the warm white sand, to the beautiful sunsets and wildlife, I realized just how much inspiration was right in front of my eyes.  Seeing how carefree the birds were flying above the calming waves, made me completely enveloped in the moment.  Inspired by the movement of the birds and texture of their wings, I created several wild, textured looks to embody a carefree attitude and show the natural movement of the hair.

To create look B:

1) Apply Style Link Volume Builder to damp hair and blow-dry with a medium round brush.

2) Section out a Mohawk-shape from front to back and secure the hair. Braid the sides using a cornrow technique, applying Style Link Smooth Setter while braiding.

3) Spray Style Link Heat Buffer to individual sub-sections and micro-crimp the mohawk shape from scalp to ends. After the entire section is completely crimped, release the side braids. The result will be a looser crimp on the sides and a tighter crimp on top.
