Okay, I admit it. I love watching television. I know that most intellectuals would never cop to spending their time in front of the boob tube, but I believe you just have to be smart about your viewing selections. I am not a big fan of reality television, which seems to dominate the airwaves, but I do love a good drama or comedy. When I was young I used to race to the drugstore the last week in August to buy the Fall Preview issue of TV Guide. I couldn't wait to see all the places television would take me.

Now that I work at American Salon, I've actually met some of the hairdressers who get actors and actresses into character for the shows I love. One of them is Daniel Curet, who is department head hairstylist on ABC's Pushing Daisies. Curet and key hairstylist Yuko Tokunaga-Koach got Emmy nods in the category of Outstanding Hairstyling for a Single-Camera Series.

Also up for Emmys in the same category are Martin Samuel, who I've known for years, and Gloria Pasqua Casny, both award-winning hairdressers we've written about in American Salon. Samuel received Academy Award nominations for his work on two of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Now he's up for an Emmy for his work as department head hairstylist on HBO's Tracey Ullman's State of the Union. Casny is department head hairstylist on AMC's award-winning series, Mad Men, which is set in a fictional Madison Avenue ad agency, circa 1960. She and her team, including Lucia Mace, Anthony Wilson and Barbara Cantu, will battle it out on September 21 with Curet and Samuel.
