FYI The Latest Beauty Industry Scoop

Held earlier this year at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, KMS's Style Council 2002 was attended by more than 1,200 industry aficionados, including the press, distributors, and salon professionals. After attending an opening-night party at the KMS Playboy Mansion, where guests were greeted by "Heff," and "Sammy, Dean, and Frank" of Rat Pack fame, and later entertained by a funky '60s band, beauty pros started off day two with presentations that encompassed up-to-the-minute fashions, inspiration, demonstrations, and new product news.

The crowd received updates on the KMS Color Vitality line, caught a glimpse of KMS's new Turnstyle styling line, and enjoyed a presentation of Real.style Architexture, KMS's latest trend release. "In terms of hair, architexture is an amalgamation of natural-form-meets-man-made," explained Clive Allwright, the Redding, CA-based company's international director of education. "The collection supports the KMS Turnstyle launch because the products represent continual change to best reflect the environment."

The next day was all about giving back. KMS president and director of research Jamey Mazzotta and vice president of marketing Randy Floss presented awards to the company's top-performing distributors and stylists. Mazzotta and Floss also announced the winners of the KMS Real.style Restyle Contest, which required stylists to submit before and after entries created using KMS products to restyle the hair.

The four grand-prize winners, selected from over 350 entries, were: Ian Smith, Auckland, New Zealand; Stuart Caldwell, Wellington, New Zealand; Stacey McDonald, Omaha, NE; and Kevin Dieleman, Nanaima, British Columbia. Each winner received an all-expense-paid trip to Style Council 2002 and $2,500 cash. Commenting on the event, one guest summed up his experience this way: "I can't wait to take the inspiration I have gathered from this event 'on location' to my salon."—Kelley Donahue
