Get Smart

The New Year is always about ways to improve yourself, from quitting smoking to dieting to a host of other good intentions. At American Salon, we thought about what a hairdresser's resolution might be for 2006, and we were unanimous in coming up with education as the perfect way to start the year off in a new direction. Whenever I visited a salon or called on a manufacturer last year and asked them what their main focus was for 2006, their answer was always education. We heard you (and we listened) loud and clear. And because you told us that finding out about education can be difficult, we've come up with "The Ultimate Guide to Education".

In this special section of the magazine, we provide our readers with an in-depth look at the state of education in the beauty industry: what's new, what's working, as well as what's not, and the hot trends, including advanced learning academies and focused business courses. Here, you will also find what the major players have on the 2006 agenda for advancing education, as well as a comprehensive listing of premier educational offerings.

Education leaders like Bumble and bumble are expanding their already extensive education centers to raise the bar of this critical industry component. John Paul Mitchell Systems, name as well known for its schools as its product line, has some big news in store for 2006. OPI is unveiling their 2006 OPI Global Education program, and Matrix is planning Matrix Destination in June, a huge show that will make the industry sit up and take notice. Be sure to check out Smart Moves to find out about the rest of these movers and shakers on the education horizon this year.

And while I'm on the subject, our very own International Beauty Show (April 30-May 2, 2006) has quite a lot to talk about inside this supplement as well. IBS has expanded its multicultural and student education. For more information, be sure to visit the Web site at www.ibsnewyork.com.

Take a look, sign up for a class or two, go to an event, get out of the salon and I guarantee you will feel better about yourself and your business. Happy New Year!
