CREATE CALM

This year the Limited Edition BCA Hand ReliefTM Moisturizing Creme features our beloved ShampureTM aroma, to calm the senses as the luxurious formulation wraps hands in comforting care. During the month of October, when guests visit a salon/spa or Experience Center, they have the opportunity to be treated to Aveda’s signature Stress-Relieving Hand Ritual using the BCA Hand ReliefTM Moisturizing Creme.

“For ShampureTM we say, ‘Experience the calming aroma,’ says Guy Vincent, Aveda’s Head Pure-fumer. “When we experience an aroma, we connect to memories and emotions we associate with that smell. An aroma with a positive association can have an uplifting, energizing or calming effect.”

Formulated in 1989 in our own Botanical Aroma Lab using aromaology®, the ShampureTM aroma is comprised of an intricate blend with 25 pure flower and plant essences, including organic lavender from Bulgaria and organic ylang ylang from Madagascar. The flowers are handpicked at dawn to ensure the perfect potency of their delicate essential oils.

LEND A HAND

Since 2001, our network has donated over $3.7M to the BCRF through sales of our limited edition breast cancer products and donations to help research the environmental and genetic causes of breast cancer. For several years Aveda’s donations have supported BCRF-funded research project led by Regina M. Santella, PhD, and Mary Beth Terry, PhD at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health .

Drs. Santella and Terry are pursuing multiple approaches to better understand breast cancer risk in high-risk families. This year, they began a study to evaluate environmental exposure to a class of chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) on breast cancer risk in young girls.

Their other ongoing studies include assessment of DNA repair mechanisms as a potential screening modality for risk assessment, identification of blood-based biomarkers that can be used for early detection of breast cancer, and determining whether a chemical alteration of DNA, called DNA methylation, in high risk women differs from that in average risk women.

Collectively, these studies may lead to better preventive and early detection strategies for women with a family history of breast cancer and concurrently advance our understanding of the impact of environmental exposure on breast cancer risk.
