Life is a Masquerade

City of Hope's National Professional Salon Industry Spirit of Life Dinner and Masquerade Ball honoring Pureology's Cheryl and Jim Markham was held at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas last month. My friend actress Debi Mazar hosted the event, which had a theme of Create Beauty, Unmask Hope. To help raise money for City of Hope, an independent biomedical research, treatment and education institution for cancer, AIDS and other life-threatening diseases, I asked some of the top names in the beauty industry to design and create masks we could auction off at the gala. It felt like Christmas as we began opening the FedEx boxes that arrived on a daily basis at our office in Los Angeles. What struck me was how different each mask was, but that's what you get when you ask the most creative people you know to put on their thinking caps. I asked Albert Sanchez to photograph the masks for me so I could share them with you here and thank the people who took time out of their busy lives to work on this project. It was a disparate group that included colorist Kim Vo, makeup artist Napoleon Perdis, American Crew founder David Raccuglia, Chris and Sonya Dove, Paul Mitchell's Stephanie Kocielski and Scott Cole, Joico's Damien Carney and Sue Pemberton, Redken's Sam Villa and American Idol's Dean Banowetz. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. —Brett Vinovich, publisher, [email protected]
