Taking Asian folklore to reality, Akoi Nail Spa—opened in March 2014 in Voorhees, NJ—was inspired by koi fish, known for symbolizing peace, good luck, abundance and perseverance. To ensure her salon is an expression of the symbol, owner Jestina Lam designed it to be an intimate and calm setting. “Having no outside distractions was so important to me that I put up a wall dividing the reception and nail areas,” Lam says. To enhance relaxation, clients wear a heated neckpad filled with organic flaxseed during manicures and pedicures, and are treated to a homemade Dead Sea salt oil scrub. After clients finish receiving their nail service—nail art decals are a favorite—they move to the drying bar, where a custom-built and heated corian stone nail table keeps hands warm. —D.C.
