I love this time of year, when spring has sprung and the creative itch needs scratching! Amid the eclectic mix of vibes and looks from fashion designers for the Spring 2006 collections, I've noticed a handful of key hair trends that are surfacing consistently.

One that has been on the catwalks and the street for the last several seasons and continues to make an impact is the windswept, beachy, textured look for layered hair. It works with the boho-chic and rocker-glam trends. It's relaxed and just a little messy, making it a good choice for every day.
The second look that really stands out does just that because it's big! A little Afro-esque and reminiscent of '70s spice, it features curls and a touch of frizz in layered shapes, which creates round volume. If the hair has layers, just curl it with a one-inch or smaller barrel iron and comb it through with the fingers, and that's the result you'll get.
A third trend shining through for spring is the perennially chic chignon in all forms. Sleek, shiny, smooth and pulled off the face and forehead, this picture-pretty, refreshing style can take on several forms. It can be ballerina-esque, very smooth and perfect, and is also lovely in a more loose interpretation with random strands trailing out.
In addition to pretty hair and gorgeous clothes, accessories were also big on the runways this spring—and thankfully, I'm not talking about the banana clip! I wouldn't have ever guessed that glittery headbands and bejeweled barrettes would be so big this season, until I recently met a designer who has created truly unique hair accessories that are nothing like I've ever seen before. Colleen McCann is a fashion stylist who has studied fashion design, and her second love is hair. In fact, she worked in a salon for a few years and decided to combine two things she loves: hair and jewelry. So about a year ago, she started designing hair jewelry, which is secured into the hair by means of either a clip or a hairpin. Inspired by the geisha culture, Byzantine era and ancient Egypt, her pieces are perfect for the various spring hair trends.
