Bibhu Mohapatra’s fall 2013 collection recalled 1930s-era style, especially legendary photographer Man Ray's photos of his Parisian muses Kiki du Montparnasse and Lee Miller. Incorporating these ’30s-era elements in the hair, Amit Abraham for L’Oréal Professionnel created a style that also played off the honeycomb patterns in the clothes.
To achieve the beautiful updo, Abraham prepped the hair with L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil Reinforcing Milk for a smooth gloss. Then, Abraham separated the underneath portion of hair from the top of the hair and created a low ponytail. He split the pony into two or three pieces, depending on hair thickness; each part was sectioned into “honeycombs” with elastics. This part of the hair was then wrapped into a low bun and True Grip Texturizing Power kept the style in place. Each “honeycomb” was loosened to create more texture. The hair that had been pulled aside at the top of the head was straightened, except for one section, which was crimped into finger waves and pulled back, then draped over the bun and left unpinned for movement. Infinium 3 Hairspray was applied before crimping for hold and Perfect Shimmer was sprayed for shine.
For makeup, Maybelline lead artist Charlotte Tilbury took inspiration from the painted portraits of the 1920s and ’30s, making sure to keep edges soft. She used red and pink on the lip, highlighted the top of the cheekbone for a youthful lift, dusted eye shadow on and around the eyes, and lathered Vaseline on the eyelids for a wet effect.
Hony for Maybelline created the look for nails, which was a honeycomb pattern straight from the designer’s collection. Using a detail art brush, the pattern was painted on the nail in black.
