The buzzword at Derek Lam’s Fall/Winter 2013 show was “bohemian minimalism,” and clothes featured structure with silhouettes and texture for an overall casual but luxurious quality. Stationed in the back rooms of the Sean Kelly Gallery, Orlando Pita for Phyto followed suit for the hair, which he described as “a graphic shape with some fuzziness.”
First, extensions were added to several models’ hair for fullness and to eliminate any layers for one length, straight across. Hair was separated into 3-inch wide sections, which Pita sprayed with Phyto Workable Holding Spray and blow-dried with the T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i Dryer. Then, the hair was brushed through and braided. The T3 SinglePass Flat Iron was run over the braid and hair was left to cool. Working through random sections of the hair, Pita created approximately eight or so braids of even thickness, which were undone and brushed out with slight back-teasing, allowing for frizz. To finish, hair was parted in the middle to add symmetry to the face before it was pinned behind the ears.
For makeup, Estée Lauder’s Tom Pecheux gave the skin a matte satin finish and the eyelids a nude, metallic shimmer. The base lip color was neutral and varied based on the model’s skin tone, with an added hint of black for a strong stain. He did not use highlighting, blush, contouring or mascara. Nails were achieved combining two nude colors, to reflect Lam’s minimalistic theme.
