Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2013 NYC: Katie Gallagher

At The Standard Hotel in New York City Friday, TIGI Global Creative Director Nick Irwin created druid-like hair for Katie Gallagher’s Narnia-inspired collection that was predominantly black and combined form-fitting and draped pieces. The hairstyle took on a slightly dark attitude yet retained an element of beauty, featuring dual texture that was flat at the top and streamlined back into a rougher texture.

“The hair transitions from greasy to whimsical,” Irwin said, and he relied on Catwalk Session Series True Wax for the hair at the crown and Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray and Curlesque Lightweight Mousse for a dryer, brittle quality at the back. First, Irwin twisted the hair around his finger, twirled it toward the scalp and pinned it to the head. After a light misting of hairspray, the hair was released from the pins, curled with an iron for an irregular wave, and then brushed through to create frizziness. Irwin took a flat-iron to the top half of the hair, and bobby pins were added underneath the crown to ensure strands remained sleek and pressed to the head; rather than hiding the pins with the hair, they were left exposed to become a main accessory. To finish off the look, hair was backbrushed and a few pieces were pinned at the center of the back of the head. Finally, the bottom was gathered in an elastic.

For makeup, M.A.C artist Romero Jennings aimed for a “winter froze you away” face, creating a white acrylic-looking skin, lining the eyes with a powdery blue and painting the lips nude. The nails were less subtle; lead manicurist for Color Club Simcha Whitehall fashioned a sharp talon, using pointillism and ombré with shades of gray, for an intense nail that emanated a winter night’s snowy sky.
