Rutger for Cutler Salon at Reem Acra
The signature elegance of Reem Acra was preserved at its spring 2012 show at the brand's 5th Avenue showroom, with rich, luxe fabrics, like skin-soft leather that bore bold colors and animal prints. Lead hairstylist Rutger for Cutler Salon/Redken created a look to complement the collection's style but also added a touch of playful youth. He designed a bun that remained raw with the definition of texture so that it almost looked like models had done it themselves. This was to emphasize an element of independence, "that they are able to do their own hair without complications," Rutger said. He used products that are suitable for women to use on their own, like Guts 10 volume spray for a beachy texture and grip to make hair more manageable. "It resembles an easy style before a night out, a playfulness and elegance," Rutger said. To achieve the look, Guts 10 was sprayed all over hair, which was then brushed and finger dried. Hair was then scraped back with fingers and given no part. At the nape of the neck, a regular elastic was used to tie hair, and the length was teased a little. After being loosely twisted, the ponytail was pushed in a round form and pinned. For finish, Rutger used Quick Dry 18 hairspray. A few bits were left out for a careless look. "It's glam mixed with easiness," Rutger said.
For nails, Red Door Spa's Alisha Botero used a system similar to applying foundation before a bronzer. Nails were kept long and filed to a rounded edge before they received two coats of Essie's Sand Tropez for a creamy nude base. Next, one coat of Essie's Sequin Sash, a golden shade, was painted on top. The look was a flawless cream foundation with a light shimmer and gold dusting on the top.
M.A.C. provided makeup, producing an ethereal young glow on the face. After highlighting and shading the cheekbones, brow, nose and bow of lips, a sheer eyeshadow and a couple coats of mascara were applied to eyes. The palette consisted of pale pinks and a brighter peach for a splash of color. A natural lip color was painted to give a fresh and youthful shine, completing the overall look meant to keep the clothes looking elegant. —Kristen Heinzinger
