At the gorgeous Standard East Village Penthouse balcony, overlooking all of New York City, Designer Ann Yee showed her beautiful Spring 2013 collection inspired by fishermen, the sea, salty ocean air and beyond.
Yee's inspiration for her collection came from the time she spent living in Seattle, after having just endured a studio fire that destroyed many of her belonging. "I needed to refresh and rejuvenate," Yee said. What came from this time is a collection of clothes that she says represents that rejuvenation, full of flowing silhouettes, textured fabric and ethereal, sea-like prints.
Nick Irwin for Catwalk by TIGI took this theme and went with it in the hair by creating beautifully coiled updos reminiscent of fisherman's rope. He also made the hair super glossy, as if it were wet, by using Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray.
"Each twist is different for each girl," Irwin said noting that dependent on the hair texture of the model, the roped knots would all come out edgy and distinct for each look. To add an urban edge, Irwin first divided the hair into two strict partings, one on top and one on bottom and secured them into ponytails. He then twisted the ponies inwards having them meet together. Irwin used TIGI Catwalk Session Series True Wax throughout the hair while twisting as, he said, this helped to control the hair.
Risa Robins-Molony for Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics did the makeup and kept the look vibrant with the bright orangey/red Loose Color Concentrate called Rust on the lids. Robins-Molony noted that the look for the skin was dewy and soft to be like the sea, but the colored lids added the edge. For the lips, Robins-Molony used Lip Tar in Strumpet.
The final look was that of urban, edgy exotic mermaids looking over the skyscrapers of New York City.
