Mercedes-Benz Spring 2013 Fashion Week: Betsey Johnson

Betsey Johnson’s show at ESPACE was not only a reveal of her spring 2013 collection, but also a full on party for the designer who turned 70 the day of the collection's reveal. To celebrate, the show also featured vintage Betsey pieces from the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s as well as a birthday/party dress collection and a performance by the legendary Cyndi Lauper.

The entire event and collection centered on everything Betsey: loud, fun, crazy and a hint of ‘80s glam, which is what Lead Stylist Jon Reyman for Aveda channeled for the ’do he created. The hair was prepped with Control Force then crimped section-by-section from roots to ends. After the entire head was crimped, the team sprayed more Control Force to hold the look then brushed out the hair with their fingers and back combed to shape and added a little more texture, making sure it didn't look fuzzy, right before the models took the stage.

Lead Artist Gato for Maybelline New York played up this ‘80s-inspired style by creating a face that paid homage to superheroes by creating a dramatic eyebrow with black eyeliner and eyes played up with splashes of yellow, silver and gray over the lid, emphasized with thick, false lashes. The lips sealed the look with a deep, vibrant red called Very Berry and a layer of glitter and clear gloss created the ultimate ‘80s-glam look.

Broadway Nails was on hand to give manicures to each model, using Impress press-ons. Lead Nail Artist Gina Edwards said the color, Ruby Kisses, another vibrant and glittery red, and shape were retrospective to Betsey’s collections from vintage to the 21st century. —Aja Edwards
