Mercedes-Benz Spring 2013 Fashion Week NYC: Ivana Helsinki

Finnish designer Paola Suhonen for her brand Ivana Helsinki called on exaggerated silhouettes and eye-catching prints for her Spring 2013 collection last night at Pier 57 for New York Fashion Week.

Hair and makeup was created by Brian C. Hawkins for Paul Mitchell and Mirabella and featured Suhonen's traditional request, to have one part of the makeup standout. For the Spring 2013 look that distinction was in the lips.

"Each season we do one thing that is a little special," said Hawkins. "This season I did the dark lip lined and deepened with Mirabella Madame Rouge and then, with a dark brown pencil, I added one single vertical line on the cupid of the lip."

For the hair Hawkins kept things sleek and simple with a low pony featuring volume through the head so there was still a bit of movement on top; The hair also covered the ears. Hawkins used the Awapuhi Wild Ginger line by Paul Mitchell to create the look. He first prepped the hair with the Hydrocream Whip and the Styling Treatment Oil. He then blow-dried the hair backwards to create the most volume and used Hydromist Blow-Out Spray throughout. The tail of the pony was flat ironed and more oil was added for shine.

The collection is based on a film shot by Suhonen in Finland that is centered around guests at an old motel in midsummer during a time when all might be ending; the film preceded the runway show of dramatic floral print dresses, light summer jackets, coats with extravagant shoulders and the brand’s signature graphic tees.
